In Goa; the so called State of the States, we are aware of so many serious wrong doings in our respective areas; by specific politicians at state/municipal/panchayat level, specific mine owners, many mega-project builders & worse still, even few corrupt religious leaders, who abuse their highly respected positions & trust of their people, for selfish interests; and many of us blindly follow these specific religious leaders. The weakest people in the society are often the most exploited & suppressed, by such wrong doings.
But I think that the even bigger tragedy is that there are still so many Goans (both in Goa & Outside) who appear cold & unconcerned. One key reason is selfishness with the “perceived comfort” that the issues don’t affect them but these very people would surely act, if they themselves were threatened and would then expect others to support or sympathise with them!! The other reason is that many are handcuffed by their own illegalities, corruption, greed, vested interests & links with specific corrupt politicians.
Also, there are some Overseas Goans who are doing wonders for Goa, but there are many others who just have “an elated sense of a higher status” with their foreign countries citizenship/residence; they have forgotten about “where they came from” and the land of their birth/ancestors; surely they can give back something to help realize Goa’s true potential with their Global Best Practices, ideas, experiences, skills etc; and perhaps enable Goa to have much better living standards than in their overseas/adopted countries. To quote Norman Cousins “The Tragedy of life is not death, but what we let die inside of us while we live”
You are right Arwin...Its not only the selfishness, its their inability to achieve success in their own motherland. Just becoz they have a job abroad, a house , cars and artificially air conditioned houses, they think they have acheived everything in this world. But the truth is they just act. They are not happy, they pretend to be happy, just a makeup to show others. They have lost their identity and culture and they are learning a lession from their kids who don't even respect their identity or culture. They feel they are progressing and returning to Goa or helping their motherland is disgraceful to them. But as we Goan collective are to be blamed for this. We gave our own corrupt goans to take over our land and our identity. Any Goan living and settled abroad feels disgraceful to return to goa or even think that Goa is not their motherland, have failed within themself to adapt themself to their motherland and their inability to be successful in their motherland. These are the people who have no options left in life but let die inside their desire while they live.
I am not a Goan, however had I been born in Goa I would not have stood idly by whilst it was being destroyed. Any true Goan should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen.
Living abroad is no excuse for inaction or apathy in today's technological age.
Hower "inability to be successful in their motherland" is a somewhat limited view. If a person's abilities or talents are more valuable elsewhere, then that person is free to earn his living anywhere he chooses.
Also they are not to blame for the inaction and apathy of those that chose to live in Goa and failed to do anything whilst it happened.
Whether or not "they are happy" or "pretend to be happy" is irrelevant to the plight of Goa and serves no purpose. They are not to blame for "your" predicament .. YOU ARE
Only the "Goan Collective" can stand together and change things for the better. That needs to include "True Goan" politicans, media, policemen and the general public .. Goa needs the honest, true hearted; brave Goans to stand up and be counted ..
In the words of the famous Goan "William Wallace" cry "FREEDOM !!!!" (okay so he was Scottish but he would have definitely fought for the cause).
